About the Rock That Swing Festival

The Rock That Swing Festival brings together people from around the world who love to dance or listen to the music of the 20s to 50s. Participants from over 30 nations have attented the Rock That Swing Festival already. A large set of top bands, instructors, and performers create one of the best events, unmatched in its variety and classy atmosphere covering the great dances and the hot music from the 20s to 50s. Watch stylish people with cool attitude dressed up in vintage clothing, petticoats or suits, with slick hair or pony tails, like Fred Astaire, Elvis or Marilyn Monroe, or be part of it yourself. But most important: Rock That Swing is about having a good time.

Evenings

Different venues from smaller cozy studios up to the grand nights at the “Deutsches Theater” let you experience the feeling of the Swingin’ Forties and the Rockin’ Fifties. You will have plenty of options with dance on multiple dance floors at the major nights covering different styles of music. But even if you are not a dancer you will find pleasure diving into this special atmosphere, and enjoying the performances of the bands, the shows, the contests and the happy faces of the dancing audience. At the Deutsches Theater and the Künstlerhaus you can have a reserved seat and at the Deutsches Theater you can also dine at your table. All major nights present multiple bands and DJs, that belong to the best in the world and will make your fingers snip and your body move.

The Rock That Swing Festival is offering a series of open contests in Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie, Balboa, Shag, and Charleston. Watch the best dancers compete for honor and great prizes.

The line-up of the best international teachers and performers will perform incredible shows in the Deutsches Theater at Saturday and Sunday evening. The show program showcases dances like Lindy Hop, Charleston, Burlesque, Balboa and Boogie Woogie and, like every year, the anticipated teachers’ jam on Sunday will mark the climax of the show's program.

For the untiring ones the two After Hours Parties (Friday and Saturday night) will give you more time to party and dance at the Vintage Club until you drop.

Dance Camp

It doesn’t matter if you can dance or not. If you ever wanted to learn the Swing dances, the Rock That Swing Festival is the perfect place to start with specially designed classes for beginners up to teachers. Learn from the world’s best dance champions and find out about the new fads, styles, and moves.

There are also some introduction classes for beginners at the beginning of the Saturday and Sunday evening event.

Dress Code

In general we want to encourage you to accomplish the atmosphere of the dance nights with a stylish outfit; best would be 40s or 50s style of course. Training pants and T-shirts are meant for training or the beach and are not suitable for a delightful evening. If you don’t have special vintage clothing you can’t go wrong with a nice dress for the girls or a nice suit for the guys. You can also shop for chic clothing, dance shoes, accessories, the newest CDs, DVDs, and Rock That Swing souvenirs during the Festival at the Vintage Market.

How to Get There

Munich city is easily accessible by plane, train, or car and the city’s excellent infrastructure makes it convenient to go around by public transportation. All studios of the Rock That Swing Dance Camp and all evening locations are located within very short walking distance in the center of Munich. The website provides you detailed maps and travel directions.

Accomodation

The possibility for private hosting is very limited, but due to the central location it is very convenient and common to stay in a hotel. There is a big variety of hotels and hostels in different price categories.

All teachers and bands will stay at our partner hotels Hotel Wallis and the connected Hotel Präsident. The hotels are located conveniently just across the street of the Deutsches Theater and the Vintage Club. From February 1st to 10th, 2016 both hotels offer a special rate incl. a delicious breakfast buffet for all RTSF participants. You can find all necassary information on the hotel page.

Tight Budget

You can book single evenings and single days of the Dance Camp to tailor your booking to your budget and your time. Students and groups of 10 or more people receive additional discounts.

Very cheap accommodation can be found at hostels from about 20-€ per night.

You can earn free camp days or evenings through helping at or before the festival. So you can for example work two days and then participate two days for free. If you are interested contact us at helpers@rockthatswing.com.

The time of the Rock That Swing Festival is a off-peak travel season. You can find cheap flights and great train deals.
